At Least 7 Killed in Shooting at Oikos University on Edgewater Rd, Oakland

A gunman opened fire Monday at a Christian university in California, killing at least seven people, wounding three more and setting off an intense, chaotic manhunt that ended hours later with his capture at a shopping center, authorities said.

Oakland police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:33 a.m. PDT Monday to a report of multiple victims shot at Oikos University, 7850 Edgewater Road.

Four people were transported to Highland Hospital. Four bodies are reported covered by tarps. Fatalities have been reported by police.


The offender is described as a male/Asian in his forties with a heavy build and wearing khaki clothing. He is reported to have fired multiple shots inside a nursing classroom.

As of 12:10 p.m. PDT the man was reported to be at large, and police reported about 12:10 p.m. that they did not know if the gunman had fled or if he is still in the building or the neighborhood. About eight minutes later police released a Twitter message that a suspect was in custody. A perimeter was setup around the school for public safety. A SWAT team is conducting evacuations and a search of the building and property.

The traffic perimeter reported to be blocked is Edgewater, from Roland to Pendleton, and along Oakport from Roland to Edgewater.
