Elk Grove Village police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 5:03 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a suicidal subject in the 1000 block of Charlela Lane at the Hamilton Court Apartments. Police received a report that a man was inside an apartment, but sending text messages that concerned a third party. The third party described the message(s) to police.
Police were on the scene immediately, while firefighter/paramedics staged a little further away. Police were unable to contact the male subject. The man was still in the apartment and was believed to be Manuell Jones, a resident in the apartment complex. Police investigated the subject while awaiting the opportunity to contact him.
Police reported a shot fired about 5:37 p.m. and called for a NIPAS response about two minutes later. NIPAS is the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System similar to a SWAT response. Police equipment staged at Nerge and Devon at a shopping plaza, where witnesses reported eventually seeing heavily armed police with armored vehicles and police command vehicles arriving in the area. Police maximize safety to officers and residents with a NIPAS response with protective gear and technical observation equipment, as a precaution in case the incident is more complex than a suicide.
Police evacuated residents from the building and secured access to the building. Police also blocked Charlela at Nerge. Later Nerge Road was shut down between Nerge/Devon and Nerge/Rohlwing Road.
The incident was secured by about 8:15 p.m. when police confirmed that there was no threat inside the apartment, and a man was found dead. The man was pronounced dead about 8:46 p.m. and was identified as Manuell Jones, 27, of the 1000 block of Charlela Lane.
Residents of the apartment complex were allowed to return to their units by about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday while police switched to technical evidence and investigative mode.
Mutual aid police started clearing the scene about 8:40 p.m. and later during the night.
