An earthquake struck about 271 miles southwest of Banda Aceh, the capital of Indonesia’s Aceh province with a magnitude of 8.6, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake occurred at a depth of 14 miles.
A second earthquake, magnitude 8.2, occurred about 295 miles west southwest off of the west coast of Sumatra about two hours later, according to the USGS.
