Police activity on Route 53, just north of Algonquin Road.
Several area police departments responded about 8:11 a.m. Saturday to back up one or more law officers on Route 53, just north of Algonquin Road. Police received a call for assistance from a deputy that was in a struggle with a prisoner during an attempted escape. Apparently, an Elgin police officer was transporting a prisoner when the prisoner kicked out a window and escaped from the police car in the northbound lanes of Route 53.
Police en route were told that shots were fired, but that the police were not injured. First units on the scene reported the suspect was in custody and immediately call for paramedics. Schaumburg firefighter/paramedics responded about 8:14 a.m. Saturday to a report of a gunshot wound. Schaumburg paramedics called for a second ambulance to respond to check on a police officer. The prisoner was transported to Level One Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. The police officer was transported to Northwest Community Hospital, where was treated and released. The police officer was not shot.
Schaumburg police, Cook Sheriff police, Rolling Meadows police, Arlington Heights police and Illinois State police troopers were on the scene.
No confirmation yet whether injuries were due to a gunshot or from jumping out of a police car moving at expressway speeds. Witnesses in the neighborhood northeast of the scene reported hearing three shots. Developing …
