A 3-year-old boy fatally shot himself with a gun he found in a car while his family stopped for gas early Wednesday at a gas station in Washington, police said.
A Tacoma-area family stopped for gas about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. The boy’s father put his pistol under the car seat while he got out to pump gas, and while the boy’s mother went inside the gas station convenience store.
While away from the three-year-old son and infant daughter, the boy managed to crawl out of his car seat, retrieved the gun and fatally shot himself in the head. The infant girl was not injured.
The tragedy is the third gun accident in Washington. The 7-year-old daughter of a Marysville, Washington police officer was killed when she was accidentally shot by her brother after he found a gun in the glove compartment of his father’s car last Saturday.
On February 22, 2012 an eight-year-old girl was critically wounded in a classroom in Armin Jahr Elementary in Bremerton, when a gun fired as 9-year-old boy put a backpack with the gun inside down on a desk. He took the gun — a .45-caliber — from the glove compartment of a car while visiting his mother and her boyfriend at their home. The boy lives with his uncle.
