Rescuers pulled a 5-year-old girl alive from the rubble of a house flattened by an avalanche that killed both her parents and at least seven of her relatives in a remote mountain village in southern Kosovo.
A five-year-old girl, Asmira Reka, was rescued in the village of Restelica after local villagers used shovels during a fierce snowstorm to dig deep into the snow-covered rubble that occurred after her house was buried in about 33 feet of snow. One person is believed to be missing.
Asmira Reka was buried for more than 10 hours. She was rescued after rescuers and villagers discovered the bodies of a married couple and their 17-year-old son. Six more bodies were discovered during the Saturday night through Sunday rescue and recovery excavation.
Heavy snow has hit the area for more than two weeks. Roads in Restelica and the region have been blocked for several days.
