Mount Prospect police received a report that a woman received a call on Monday from two men claiming to be a police officer and her grandson. The victim was told her she needed to send $2,200 to get her grandson, an Arizona resident, out of jail in South America. She asked to speak with her grandson, and a second person — posing as her grandson — spoke with her. The second offender said he had a cold, and that was the reason his voice didn’t sound familiar.
The victim wired the money from a Mount Prospect Dominick’s store to Lima, Peru. She immediately called the phone number the offenders had given her to ask whether her grandson had been released or not. The offenders told her that a judge was demanding an additional $6,000, and she became suspicious. She called her grandson and realized she had been scammed when he told her he wasn’t in jail.
