Kansas City Chiefs director of college scouting Phil Emery, one of two finalists for the Bears general manager position, is the new general manager for the Chicago Bears. He replaces Jerry Angelo, who was fired after an injury-riddled 8-8 season.
Emery worked for the Chicago Bears as an area scout from 1998-2004 — his first job with the NFL.
Emery later served as director of college scouting with the Falcons from 2004-08, and then worked as a regional scout for the Atlanta Falcons.
Emery has worked for the Kansas City Chiefs as director of college scouting for the past three seasons.
Before working in the NFL, Emery served as director of strength and conditioning services as well as an associate professor at the U.S. Naval Academy from 1991-98. Emery was responsible for the development, administration and supervision of all strength and conditioning activities for 4,000 Midshipmen.
The other finalist for the Bears general manager position was Patriots director of pro personnel Jason Licht. Both men interview twice at Halas Hall.
