Schaumburg police responded about 10:32 p.m. Sunday to a report of man threatening suicide at the Tilted Kilt, 1140 East Higgins Road. Police received a report that a man was threatening suicide and had two guns in his hands. Police arrived within a minute and reported seeing a man kneeling. Police then reported the man was seen in the parking lot near the front door. At about 10:36 p.m. police reported they were observing a shot or shots fired and that the man was down. Police immediately called for Schaumburg fire department firefighter/paramedics and set up a perimeter for a crime scene. Police had little time to negotiate a surrender.
Police did not call for any search for a suspect, and they did not declare anyone in custody. The gunshots were apparently self-inflicted.
Soon after the Schaumburg Fire Department rescue-ambulance arrived, the paramedic crew reported they were available for another call. No other injuries were reported.
Schaumburg police detectives were called to the scene. Police also reported there were several witnesses to the incident.
The man that is believed to have shot himself was identified as Michael Cicci, 28, of Palatine, Illinois. Police and the Cook County Coroner’s office confirmed early Monday that the death was a suicide.
According to the Tilted Kilt official web page for the Schaumburg location, the pub & eatery is open 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 a.m. (midnight) on Sundays.
The location was a popular spot Sunday night for watching the New York Giants vs. San Francisco 49ers NFC Championship game just hours before the incident.
