Investigators in New Orleans are trying to determine the cause of a massive pre-dawn pileup on Thursday. Two people were killed and 61 injured in the pileup that shut down Interstate-10 for hours.
A 40-vehicle crash was reported about 4:30 a.m. Thursday morning on Interstate 10 near Michoud Boulevard. Two men in separate pickup trucks were killed in the multi-vehicle crash. Sixty-one people were reported injured in the crash in the westbound lanes between exits 246 and 248.
One firefighter was injured while extricating a person from a vehicle, and was treated and released from the hospital.
Fog or smoke is suspected of being related to the cause of the crash. The eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 near the crash were re-opened about 12 hours after the crash, but the westbound lanes were still closed.
