UPDATE: A battery shipped in a bag is the cause of an explosion at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
Chicago Fire Department responded about 11:55 a.m. (time not confirmed) to a report of a small explosion at United Airlines Terminal 1, Concourse C. The small explosion was apparently near a baggage handling area — away from the public.
A United Airlines employee is reported injured with minor injuries and transported to Resurrection Medical Center, just east of O’Hare International Airport in Chicago.
At least four gate walkways were observed empty with no aircraft in proximity at the gates. One ambulance, two Chicago police trucks, several police cars and unmarked SUVs, a hazmat truck, Engine 9, O’Hare Aviation Division Buggy 2-9-13, FBI investigators, Chicago Bomb and Arson unit officers, an Incident Command vehicle, and Battalion 6 on the scene.
The shipping arrangements and details are being investigated. No criminal activity is suspected at this point.
