Video at Night: Explosions shook the north-central Ill. village of Tiskilwa Friday when a freight train loaded with highly flammable ethanol crashed and ignited, sending bright orange flames jetting skyward and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of residents.
The north central Illinois town of Tiskilwa was evacuated after a Rock Island line freight train carrying the denatured alcohol — ethanol — derailed and caught fire early Friday morning.
Sixty of the train cars were tanker cars carrying highly flammable ethanol. The train derailed about 2:00 a.m. Friday on the edge of Tiskilwa. The total train consisted of two locomotives and 100 train cars.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) responded Friday.
Tiskilwa is a village in Bureau County. The population of Tiskilwa is about 800.
