This season is the St. Louis Cardinals’ 130th season for the franchise in St. Louis, Missouri, the 120th season in the National League, and the sixth season at Busch Stadium III. The Cardinals were founded in the American Association in 1882 as the St. Louis Brown Stockings, taking the name from an earlier National League team. The St. Louis Brown Stockings joined the National League in 1892 and have been known as the St. Louis Cardinals since 1900. The team was temporarily known as the ‘Perfectos’ in 1899. The Cardinals began playing in the current Busch Stadium in 2006.

The Cardinals have a long standing rivalry with the Chicago Cubs. The rivalry is also known as the I-55 series (or in earlier years the Route 66 series), named after the roadway connecting Chicago and St. Louis, Interstate 55 (formerly the famous U.S. Route 66). The Cubs lead the series 1,091–1,044 through 2010. The St. Louis Cardinals lead the Cubs in National League pennants, 18 to 16. The Cardinals dominate the Cubs in World Series wins. The St. Louis Cardinals have won 10 championships, while the Chicago Cubs have only won two. Cardinals-Cubs games visiting fans frequently attend either St. Louis’ Busch Stadium or Chicago’s Wrigley Field.

The Cardinals began the 2011 season at home against the San Diego Padres on March 31, 2001, coming off a 86-76 (.531) season and second place in the NL Central. They returned to postseason play in 2011 (after missing out in 2010) as the Wild Card team, and beat the Philadelphia Phillies in five games in the Division Series and the Milwaukee Brewers in six games in the National League Championship Series. The Cardinals’ season record was 91-72 on September 28, 2011.

This is the Texas Rangers’ 51st season in the overall history of the franchise and the 40th since the team relocated to Arlington, Texas. The franchise originated in 1961 as the Washington Senators, an expansion team awarded to Washington, D.C. after the city’s first ballclub, the original Washington Senators, relocated to Minnesota and became the Twins. After the 1971 season, the new Senators moved to Arlington, Texas and debuted as the texas Rangers the following spring. Going into the 2011 season the Texas Rangers were the defending 2010 American League champions. The Rangers’ season record was 91-72 on September 28, 2011.
