Itasca and Elk Grove Village police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 9:30 a.m. Thursday to a report of a vehicle submerged in a pond with a victim inside the car near Devon and Park Boulevard. Neighbors reported they learned that a woman, possibly in her 80’s, Mirdza Robezniek, backed out of her driveway in the 200 block of Bay Drive into the pond. Her husband Gunnar tried to stop the car from floating out to the center of the pond, even after he was injured when he ran and fell as he was trying to stop the car from rolling toward the pond.
Itasca police and firefighter/paramedics attempted to break the car’s windows, but were unsuccessful. Elk Grove Village Fire Department divers responded to a MABAS Diver’s Box requested by Itasca Fire Department and pulled Robezniek from the water after she and the car were submerged for about 20 minutes.
