VIDEO: Fire at a paper recovery and recycling facility with firefighters working to remove and extinguish quantities of paper and plastic at 600 Thomas Drive in Bensenville, Illinois.
Bensenville Fire Department requested an extra alarm response for a fire at a warehouse at 600 Thomas Drive about 2:45 p.m. Wednesday. A large warehouse functions as a recovery and paper recycling facility. Large bales of paper and some plastic were burning inside the warehouse. Firefighters ventilated the roof, fought an interior attack and then worked with employees using Bobcats and other excavating equipment to carry the burning or wetted down bales out of the warehouse.
Smoke showed out of the building for about two hours.
Fire departments from Bellwood, Chicago, Elk Grove Village, Elmhurst, Franklin Park, Hillside, Itasca, Mount Prospect, Northlake, Norwood Park, Itasca, Rosemont, Schiller Park and others assisted Bensenville Fire Department.
Chicago Fire Department sent a Mobile Ventilation Unit, which is used to fight difficult fires, such as compacted paper, etc.
A second alarm was requested at about 3:20 p.m. Wednesday.
