A 6.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded 2:55 a.m. AKDT Friday in the Pacific Ocean near the Fox Islands prompted a brief tsunami warning early Friday morning for Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, but the warning was canceled after only a small wave was recorded in the community of Atka, Alaska.
The Fox Islands are a group of islands in the eastern Aleutian Islands of the U.S. state of Alaska, and are the closest island to mainland North America in the Aleutian chain. The islands are just east of Samalga Pass and the Islands of Four Mountains group. The islands are foggy almost year round and are difficult to navigate because of the fog.
