Sheriff Dart partners with AT&T and AAA Chicago to raise awareness
With homecoming arriving at area high schools, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart is conducting a series of interactive programs aimed at educating teens about the dangers of dangerous or distracted driving – whether involving alcohol or texting.
Sheriff Dart’s DUI/Distracted Driving Prevention Unit is partnering with AT&T Illinois and AAA Chicago to bring the demonstration to students across the area. At 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, the demonstration is set to take place at Marist High School, 4200 W. 115th St. in Chicago. Students there will be using special driving simulators provided by AAA Chicago and will also drive golf carts while texting to show just how dangerous it is to text and drive. They will also attempt to walk a straight line while wearing goggles that simulate alcohol impairment.
The DUI/Distracted Driving Prevention Unit delivers strong messages to young drivers about the dangers of distracted driving. The program includes video presentations with personal experiences of the consequences of driving while distracted or under the influence, before introducing the interactive component.
AT&T Illinois will also encourage the students to send a text pledge to not text and drive, demonstrating their commitment to safe driving. This continues AT&T’s “It Can Wait” campaign announced earlier this year in an effort to encourage people not to text and drive.
Sheriff Dart’s DUI/Distracted Driving Prevention Unit has been making regular appearances at high schools across Cook County since school began and will continue the program throughout the school year.
