Overhaul operations after extensive fire at a detached garage in the 1000 block of Casa Drive in Schaumburg.
Schaumburg police and firefighters responded about 11:05 p.m. Monday to a fully-involved garage fire in the 1000 block of Casa Drive. Neighbors reported that the flames from the garage fire were thirty feet in the air. Heat from the fire damaged vinyl siding of the residential unit just to the northeast of the three-unit garage in the Del Lago I Condominium neighborhood. No injuries were reported.
Schaumburg firefighters quickly extinguished the detached garage fire, which destroyed at least two vehicles, including a restored 1969 Chevelle SS, and the garage. Fire command called in a second truck company, as there was significant exposure risk to the residential unit just to the northeast of the garage fire. Three hose lines were used on the garage fire and one hose line was used to prevent fire from communicating to the exposure — residential unit. Smoke was reported in the attic of the unit, but it was apparently venting in from the smoke from the garage fire. The fire was reported most of the fire knocked about 11:20 p.m. Monday.
Word was spreading among neighbors on the scene that someone set an explosive fireworks device or other device in a dumpster, just south of the garage. After the reported explosion, fire moved to the garage and ignited the structure. Most of the south roof was destroyed. A south wall was destroyed and the east wall was unstable after the fire. Two fire investigators responded to the fire scene.
Firefighters spent a good deal of time past midnight in overhaul removing unstable parts of the roof and walls with pike poles and fire axes. Firefighters also worked a hose line to prevent a re-kindle.
