UPDATE: A house fire, possibly caused by a lightning strike in Wauconda, was reported about 5:50 p.m. Wednesday. Also a house fire, possibly caused by a lightning strike in Volo was reported just before 6:00 p.m. Wednesday. A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH was issued at 5:55 p.m. for Cook County and several other counties in northern Illinois. The SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH is in effect until 1:00 a.m. Thursday.
At 5:30 p.m. the most severe radar image extends from Lake Zurich to just west of South Elgin and Campton Hills. The severe weather nearest Arlington Heights is likely to hit western Hoffman Estates, western Palatine, Hawthorne Woods, western Long Grove. The west side of the storm extends as far as Woodstock. The storm is traveling southwest to northeast about 26 mph.
At 5:40 p.m. additional storms are forming near the intersection of Interstate 80 and Interstate 39, southwest of Aurora, Illinois and near Ottawa, Illinois. Additional storms could bring severe weather to Arlington Heights as earlier 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. These storms are not part of the current warning referred to in this post.
