Concern That Michigan State Police Officer Are Not Complying with Fourth Amendment Requirements
Michigan State Police are using handheld phone data extraction devices that can retrieve a variety of information from cell phones.
State Police purchased what are called UFEDs made by Cellebrite. In a minute-and-a-half, the handheld devices can extract almost all data from a wireless phone — even bypassing password.
“These devices can take a cell phone that’s been plugged into them and extract from the phone all kinds of information. Call history inbound and outbound, text messages, images, ring tones, pretty much anything that anyone would choose to store in their cell phone.
The news comes on the same day that it was announced that data security scientists have discovered that Apple’s iPhone has a data file that time-stamps the iPhone’s location as indicated by GPS and triangulation. The file is also located on the computer that is used to synchronize the iPhone data.
