12 Dead, Including Gunman, Wellington Oliveira, After Shooting at Tasso da Silveira school, Rio de Janiero
A gunman identified as 23-year-old Wellington Oliveira, a former student at the Tasso da Silveira school, stormed into the school in Rio de Janeiro, killing at least 12 children before shooting himself after being wounded by a police officer.
Wellington Oliveira, a former student at the Tasso da Silveira school, walked into the school with two firearms and shot at least 30 rounds — killing 10 girls and one boy. About 400 people were inside the school building when the shooting began at about 8:30 a.m. local time. Another 12 people were also injured.
Two boys escaped the school and ran to tell policemen that were on patrol nearby. The officers sprinted to the school and one of the police officers located the gunman and exchanged gunfire with him. The offender was hit in the legs, and then shot himself in the head.
VIDEO: Police in Brazil on Thursday released dramatic images of the school shooting, showing students fleeing their classroom in a panic and the purported gunman walking into the school corridor, weapon in hand.
