VIDEO: Oil Refinery Fire at Cosmo Oil Refinery in Chiba Prefecture East of Tokyo Bay
Heavy fire and explosions after Japan earthquake on March 11, 2011 burns out of control at Cosmo Oil Co.’s refinery near Tokyo in Chiba prefecture.
The 8.9-magnitude earthquake that affected the region triggered a tsunami that swept away vehicles, ships and buildings, and started fires. The refinery fire is on the east side of Tokyo Bay.
In Japan, several crude-processing plants and nuclear power reactors have been shut to avoid further mishaps, including 11 reactors from Japan Atomic Power Co, Tokyo Electric Power Co. and Tohoku Electric Power Co.
Bloomberg has quoted spokesman Yusuke Kaneda as stating that the Cosmo Oil refinery produces 220,000 barrel-a-day, and is burning after a fire started at the plant’s storage tanks.
