Snow accumulation Monday night during a Winter Weather Advisory was on the low side. The National Weather Service warned of hazardous and slippery roads. However, it was the extreme slickness of freezing rain that caught motorists and the Illinois Department of Transportation by surprise.
Multiple crashes and spinouts occurred on Route 53, and multiple crashes occurred on main arteries and side streets in communities across Cook County and Lake County.
