UPDATE: Detroit police Friday released a 68-second video that shows a gunman striding into one of the city’s precinct stations, spraying volleys from a shotgun at surprised officers before being fatally wounded within inches of three of his victims.
One day after Lamar Moore walked into a police precinct and fired his shotgun, wounding four Detroit officers, authorities are still puzzled about the motive. The four officers are recovering, but the gunman died after he was hit by return fire.
Lamar Moore entered the Detroit Police Department Northwestern District, 11450 Warwick Street where the 6th and 8th precincts are combined, and began shooting. One shot hit an officer in her bulletproof vest, two officers were grazed in the head and one officer was hit in the back. Police returned fire that eventually killed Moore.
According to court records, Moore attended a court hearing last Tuesday and was ordered to pay $57 a month for child support and health care for a 4-year-old son.
Moore was also implicated in kidnapping and sexually assaulting a runaway teen.
Lamar Moore’s background contained no felonies until October 2002, when he was arrested on drug possession and trafficking charges. In 2003 he was sentenced to three years in prison, but was released on probation in 2004.
Lamar Moore had been worried about his younger brother’s criminal case, but according to family members he didn’t blame the Detroit police for the trouble regarding his brother Venson Hibbit.
Hibbit pleaded guilty earlier in January 2011 to two counts of second-degree murder and one count of assault with intent to commit murder. Hibbits was arrested after a shooting in March 2010 at a Detroit auto repair shop, and was sentenced Monday in Wayne County Circuit Court to 30 to 60 years in prison.
Security measures included in the aftermath of the shooting at the Northwestern Distrcit now include that everyone who comes into the precinct must be searched with a wand and that everyone must wear their ID badges in the building.
