Quick stop on a fire that could have been disastrous with a few more minutes to extend into the roof.
Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 9:40 AM Tuesday to a report of a fire on a balcony of a condominium in the 2400 block of South Goebbert Road. Emergency crews received a report that thick black smoke was coming from the entire balcony of a condominium at the Ashton Condominiums of Arlington Heights.
Police arrived first and reported flames showing from the second floor balcony at 2409 South Goebbert Road — exact address was to be determined.
Mount Prospect firefighters were responding on an automatic response and were already on the street. Mount Prospect firefighters were the first firefighters on the scene and reported smoke showing. They pulled a line and made a quick knock down of the fire that was confined to the balcony. The fire was just about to extend to the roof.

There were not reported injuries. A maintenance worker at the scene believed the fire may have started when an indoor extension cord was used outdoors, and was connected to a freezer outside on the balcony. The fire damaged the freezer. There was also extensive charring to the inside of the balcony railing.
Mount Prospect Fire Department and Elk Grove Township Fire Department assisted Arlington Heights firefighters.
Arlington Heights Fire Department is investigating.
