Kankakee Fire Department and police responded about 9:00 a.m. Monday to a water treatment plant in Kankakee at 1600 W. Brookmont Blvd. All people working at the plant have been accounted for, and no injuries were reported.
The building destroyed produces methane gas used for energy. The water treatment facility is still operational. Methane is the gas that is supplied to homes as natural gas.
Debris from the explosion landed in a nearby neighborhood. A sludge was flowing into the Kankakee River, and was reported to be stopped. The information on the content of the sludge has not been released
