Wheaton police responded about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to a report of a handgun near a dirt walking path near Madison Elementary School, 1620 Mayo Avenue in southwestern Wheaton, Illinois. The path is located on the south side of the building about 75 yards from the school building.
Police found a loaded 9 mm semi-automatic handgun next to a dog leash near the dirt walkway. The police immediately checked the school ground and the school interior for any other hazards. When no additional threat was discovered the school day was allowed to start normally.
Police are searching for the owner of the gun.
