Arlington Heights police received a report about 4:15 p.m. Wednesday that workers seal-coated a resident’s driveway in the 1600 block of North Vail Avenue and then requested payment of $1,600 for the service. According to the homeowner, the work to seal-coat the driveway was never ordered.
The offending seal-coaters drove away in a light gray truck with a long trailer attached.
Cost of Doing it Yourself …
Driveways in that neighborhood are about 70′ x 25′ which equals 1875 square feet. Driveway seal coat at Home Depot costs about $14 for a 5-gallon container of Latex’-ite that is specified to cover 400 square feet. Figuring five containers would cover 2,000 square feet, the cost would be about $70 in seal coat product. A driveway squeegee also costs about $14. Some professional seal coaters publish on the Internet a minimum of $500 for a residential job seal coating a driveway.
“Generally speaking, having your driveway sealed by a professional can cost between 10 and 25 cents-a-square foot.” — allaboutdriveways.com.
Cost of Professional Service …
Calculating the high estimate published by allaboutdriveways.com, a 2,000 square-foot driveway would cost $500 (2,000 sq. ft. x $.25/sq. ft.) to have seal coated by a professional company. Extra cleaning and problems with vegetation on or near the driveway could raise the estimate.
