During January to May, 2009 there were 158 homicides in Chicago. During January to May 2010 there were 164 homicides. Twenty-eight of those homicides involved Chicago Public School students, which is three less than the preceding school year.
In separate incidents in the last two weeks, two residents used a handgun in Chicago in self-defense in their homes, where a handgun ban is in effect. No charges have been filed against the residents. The U.S. Supreme Court could overturn Chicago’s handgun ban when it rules on its constitutionality. That ruling is expected later this June.
