Waukegan firefighters responded just after 6:00 a.m. Monday to a house fire with fire showing out the front windows at 422 Julian Street. The working fire was raised to a second alarm just before 6:40 a.m. The fire was brought under control around 8:30 a.m.
Firefighters heard about 100 to 200 rounds going off inside the house. Firefighters could not start an interior attack for two hours because of the ammunition exploding and the intensity of the flames.
The second floor literally collapsed onto the first floor during firefighting operations from the outside of the house.
A body was found after firefighters extinguished the fire. The body is believed to be a male, but investigators will be working on the identity of the body.
No other injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported.
In late March, Bartlett Fire Protection District firefighters fought a fire with exploding ammo that was stored in a garage.
