French-speaking robbers armed with submachineguns and pistols fired several shots in a robbery of the Grand Casino in Basel, Switzerland near Airport Hotel, Basel Airport and the border with France. The robbery occurred about 4 a.m. (0200 GMT) with gunmen, dressed in black and wearing crash helmets. Robbers smashed cash desks with hammers and fired shots that sent staff and gamblers hitting the floor for cover.
No people were shot, but several gamblers and a security guard were injured by kicks and punches thrown by members of the armed gang. The offenders fled in two French-registered cars after they dragged a woman from a car that was blocking there getaway route near the entrance to the casino.
