Video of arcing power line that was down at southwest corner of Golf Road and Algonquin Road Sunday just before noon.
Rolling Meadows Fire Department responded to a report of lines down with spectacular arcing near Golf Road and Algonquin Road near Meijer about 11:00 a.m. High voltage feeder lines fell across Algonquin Road from the southwest corner of Golf and Algonquin to the southeast corner of Golf and Algonquin Road near Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen. One line was hanging down from the top of a utility pole on the southwest corner of Golf and Algonquin Road and striking the ground. When the wind calmed down, the end of the line hit the ground and arced with a bright light and a loud humming noise.
Other areas of arcing were reported along the east side of Golf Road toward New Wilke. Westbound Golf Road is blocked at New Wilke. Algonquin is blocked at Golf Road — all cars being forced to turn left to go east on Golf Road. Westbound Algonquin is also blocked at a Meijer store driveway. Emergency workers reported seeing holes in the ground about 12 inches deep that were caused by the arching downed power lines. Winds were about 14 mph and gusting to 24 mph at the time of the incident.
Com Ed arrived on the scene before noon and is resolving the problem. Some business were without electricity, but surprisingly many businesses still had electricity in the entire area.
The situation may not be isolated until about 1:15 p.m. Sunday, so traffic diversions and delays are expected until at least 1:15 p.m. Rolling Meadows police and Arlington Heights police are managing traffic in the area.
