Schaumburg Fire Department sent two rescue-ambulances and a pin-in response for the report of two crashes on I-290/Route 53 near Golf Road and Woodfield Road about 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
After some confusion, fire officials determined there was actually one nine-car crash on the expressway.
Two patients were injured and transported to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village. No extrication was necessary for the multi-car crash.
Inititially there was a report that bystanders were performing CPR on one of the accident victims, but this was discovered to be several people helping one person who was down on the ground — no CPR.
Illinois State Police troopers and Schaumburg Police Department officers were managing the accident. The fire department cleared the scene about 2:05 p.m.
