COLD FRONT: High Winds Cause Electrical Outages, Downed Power Lines

TUE MAR 10 2009 — Com Ed was busy across Chicagoland repairing downed power lines and blown transformers during high wind gusts over 40 mph. A downed power line near the Toyota dealership at Old Arlington Heights Road and Dundee Road was arcing on the parkway Tuesday night about 9:00 p.m.. Arlington Heights Fire Department and Buffalo Grove Fire Department stood by for safety as the downed power line arced and burned the ground on the parkway on the east side of Old Arlington Heights Road.

Both Dundee Road and Old Arlington Heights Road were blocked in both directions for about 60 minutes Tuesday night.

Com Ed responded within 30 minutes to repair the line. Over 5,000 Com Ed customers lost power in the Chicagoland area last night.

The temperature plummeted from a high of 61°F as late as 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night to 50°F by 9:10 p.m., 30°F by midnight, and 17°F by 7:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.
