Crime scene: Three shoplifted champagne bottles in the parking lot of Meijer, where witnesses reported that a security guard in pursuit of a shoplifter was stabbed by the shoplifter.
Rolling Meadows police responded to a stabbing at the Meijer store parking lot at Algonquin Road and Golf Road about 9:30 p.m. Monday. Arlington Heights Police transported two suspects in caged squad cars while Rolling Meadows Police investigated the scene. Paramedics treated a victim on the ground by light pole “G” before transporting the victim to the hospital. The victim is a security guard who was stabbed in the chest and suffered a pneumothorax or “collapsed lung” — a condition when air exits the stab wound to the lung and collects between the rib cage and the lung.
Police set up a perimeter around the crime scene to protect evidence, while a minivan remained parked in an aisle of the parking lot and three bottles of liquor rested on the asphalt of the parking lot. Several customers exited the Meijer store to discover their parked cars were inside the yellow police line. The drivers of those vehicles were not allowed to leave until the investigation was completed.
Rolling Meadows Police arrested Bradley Kellett, 27, of the 600 block of Waterford Road in Schaumburg and charged him with attempted murder, aggravated battery and retail theft after he stole three champagne bottles worth $150 and stabbed an unidentified security guard in the chest. A hearing Wednesday revealed that the suspect hid the bottles of champagne under his clothing and left the Meijer store without paying. A pursuit outside the store resulted in the security guard suffering a stab wound to the chest when he tried to stop Bradley Kellett. The security guard was treated by paramedics while lying in the parking lot almost 100 yards from the front entrance to the Meijer store in the parking lot.
Kellet was quickly captured at the scene and arrested by Rolling Meadows Police department. Bond was set $100,000 Wednesday at a hearing in the Rolling Meadows branch of Cook County Circuit Court.
Witnesses and bystanders expressed concern that Meijer is a great store and that they had never seen a crime scene like this before. Even minutes after the crime occurred; upon seeing the crime scene and investigation, most bystanders were unaware of what crime had occurred.
