Schaumburg Police investigators at the scene of a fatal motorcycle accident Sunday.
A Yamaha motorcycle and a Hyundai Sonata automobile were involved in a severe crash just after 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Higgins Road (Route 72) and Mall Drive in Schaumburg, just south of Woodfield Mall and Streets of Woodfield.
The motorcycle driver, Dean Schroeder, 39, was killed — his Yamaha motorcycle lying about 180 feet east of the intersection of Mall Drive and Higgins Road. He was transported to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village where he was pronounced dead.
The silver Hyundai Sonata with New York license plates had severe right-rear passenger and roof damage and was spun ninety degrees and resting on the median of Higgins Road about 60 feet from the center of the Mall Drive intersection. The Yamaha motorcycle was lying in the eastbound lanes about 120 feet east of the car. Glass and other crash debris were in the intersection of Higgins Road and Mall Drive in the eastbound lanes. The driver of the Hyundai apparently made a U-turn from westbound Higgins to eastbound Higgins Road while both crash vehicles had a green light.
Westbound Higgins Road is blocked for a prolonged period between Meacham and Mall Drive and traffic from Mall Drive south is being routed to westbound Higgins only — no left turns allowed to eastbound Higgins. Schaumburg’s Accident Investigation Unit is on the scene.
The Hyundai driver was transported to the hospital, treated and released to police custody for further investigation after 7:00 p.m. Sunday.
