Converting music CDs to audio files on a computer is unapproved and therefore illegal, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. In a brief ahead of an Arizona lawsuit of Atlantic Records against the Howell family, the RIAA contends that ripping CDs leads to “viral” copyright infringement, which can result in single disc multiplied by millions of copies if eventually shared through a peer-to-peer service, such as LimeWire or Grokster.
