RELATED? HERSEY STUDENT ARREST FOR EMAIL THREAT …

Writing on a bathroom wall referred to a gun threat at Hersey High School 1900 East Thomas Avenue [MAP/SAT] Thursday afternoon. An announcement near the end of the school day notified all teachers that they were required to attend a special meeting immediately at the end of the school day on Thursday. Students that were still at school after hours were told they must leave the school campus.

Arlington Heights Police and school officials investigated the incident and decided the threat was similar to other recent threats at Lane Tech High and Northern Illinois University (Huskies). School is NOT closed Friday. As a precaution there is heightened security and extra police presence at Hersey High School Friday.

Hersey High School Principal Dr. Tina Cantrell posted a security alert “Security Info 12/13/2007” on the school’s official website.

Today we have been made aware that there are some rumors circulating around the school.   We believe these rumors are a copycat of the recent graffiti that was written at Lane Tech High School.  Although we do not find these rumors to be credible, student safety remains our highest concern.  Therefore we will be instituting heightened security measures tomorrow.  This includes an increased police presence on campus.

Again, let me repeat that we do not find these rumors credible and we will continue to investigate the source.  In the meantime, the regular school day and all planned activities will proceed as normal.  If you hear anything that may cause you concern, please contact the school immediately.

Students and parents are asked to notify the Arlington Heights Police (call 9-1-1) or school officials if they learn of any threats or if they can contribute to the investigation that is searching for the source of the threat.

FLASHBACK: Prospect High School had a gun threat rumor mid-October, 2007 (Prospect High School Gun Threat: Scare, Rumor Causes Absentee Rate to Jump). Prospect High School experienced a drop attendance from a gun-related rumor that spread by word of mouth, text messaging and e-mails over a weekend time period.
