Video of one-car accident scene at Arlington Heights Road and Alqonquin Road Monday night.
A car hit a large ComEd pole at Arlington Heights Road and Alqonquin Road about 6:15 p.m. Monday night. Electric lines were draped across Arlington Heights Road and some lines were hanging mid-air in a hazardous situation. The rush hour accident left thousands of residents and businesses, including several restaurants and hotels, without power on the south side of Arlington Heights.
There was at least one injured man in the accident, whose car plowed right through a three-story wood ComEd pole on the southwest corner of Arlington Heights Road and Algonquin Road. He had a possible broken leg and a head injury. Arlington Heights Police Department requested assistance from the Illinois State Police, Elk Grove Police, Mount Prospect Police, and Rolling Meadows Police Department. Northbound Arlington Heights Road was blocked at Higgins, Northwest Point and Interstate 90. The off ramp of Interstate 90 was totally blocked by Illinois State Police. The eastbound offramp was also blocked for a while, but then open for southbound Arlington Heights Road only.
The Arlington Heights Police blocked southbound Arlington Heights Road at Golf Road. Mount Prospect Police Department help manage detours along Golf Road.
Rolling Meadows Police Department blocked eastbound Algonquin Road at Golf
Road and the Meijer Store driveways.
Mount Prospect Police Department diverted westbound Algonquin traffic to
northbound Tonne.
Stoplights were also damaged at the accident. The intersection of Algonquin and Arlington Heights is expected to be closed until about 9:30 p.m.
For help with traffic management, the Arlington Heights Police Department activated an ILEAS alarm, which summons mutual aid police help from neighboring communities.
