Cook County Circuit Court Judge Ellen B. Mandeltort ruled at a pre-trial hearing on Friday morning July 26, 2024 that an alleged shooter in Schaumburg, Michael Lang, should remain in custody because he is a danger to the public even if he were to be restricted to his home. Judge Mandeltort referred his proven ability to shoot from his home as evidence that he can harm the public from his own home.

Michael Lang is the alleged shooter of a professional tree trimmer in Schaumburg.

His parents and public defender had asked for his pre-trial release with electronic monitoring. Michael Lang lives with his parents at 801 South Braintree Drive.

Michael Lang’s parents are in their 80s, and Lang takes care of his mother, who needs a wheelchair and his father, according to the public defender.

The Cook County Prosecutor explained that Michael Lang’s parents left the home for dinner out at around 2:30 p.m. Michael was disturbed by the noise of the tree trimmers that his father hired. He asked the tree trimmers from the Davey Tree Expert Company to leave.

While the four tree trimmers were picking up their equipment and preparing to leave at about 2:46 p.m., Michael Lang allegedly retrieved a silver handgun from a blue Mazda parked in the driveway. He walked toward the victim and pointed a 5-shot revolver at the victim, saying if they didn’t leave “one of you was going to die.”

Three co-worker witnesses and the victim saw Michael Lang fire one shot into the victim’s abdomen. A passerby also witnessed the shooting. One of the co-workers and the passerby called 911 to report the shooting.

After the shooting, Michael Lang walked into the open garage, and closed the garage door. The standoff began.

Police arrived and found the victim unresponsive and bleeding profusely. The police officers formed a rescue team, and transferred the victim from the northwest corner of the property at 801 South Braintree Drive and carried the victim to meet paramedics at a safe location.

The victim was treated and transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with a gunshot entrance wound and no exit wound. The victim suffered serious injuries, including a lacerated liver and a fractured spine, among other internal injuries. Trauma surgeons at Lutheran General Hospital removed a projectile from the victim’s abdomen, along with other surgical treatment.

NIPAS SWAT personnel were activated about 3:45 p.m. and arrived around 4:15 p.m. A standoff persisted until about 9:15 p.m. when Michael Lang walked peacefully out of the house. He was transported to Alexian Brothers Medical Center for evaluation and taken into custody.

Michael Lang is graduate of Palatine High School. He attended college and got a degree in industrial or labor relations. Next, Lang graduated with a law degree. According to the prosecutor, Michael Lang is the sole lawyer at Lang Injury Law, which he may have also operated as Michael R. Lang & Associates. The Linkedin profile indicated Michael Lang specialized in cases involving personal injuries, DUI, and workplace injuries.

Lang “I Received Text Messages from Outer Space”

According to the prosecutor, Michael Lang called 911 twice, and the second time he requested an ambulance. He also told a 911 operator that he was receiving text messages from outer space. His parents indicated that their son had no prior history of mental illness. At the hearing it was reported that he suffers from some physical medical conditions.

After the standoff ended, police investigators found a total of five handguns in the house — two of them owned by Michael Lang, and the other three owned by his father. In the house, there were also two cases of ammunition, and there was one spent shell casing in an office attached to Michael Lang’s bedroom. The silver gun was still loaded with four rounds.

First Report from Schaumburg Police Department late Thursday night, July 25, 2024 …

Police, firefighters and paramedics responded about 2:47 p.m., Wednesday, July 24, 2024, to a report that a co-worker of a Davey Tree Expert Company crew was shot at 801 South Braintree Drive in Schaumburg. The 911 caller advised the 911 operator that the male offender, Michael Lang, retreated into the garage of the residence and closed the door after shooting the victim, according to the Schaumburg Police Department.

Police officers located the victim, a 66 year old male of Hanover Park, lying on the front yard. Police officers rescued the male from the yard and brought him to paramedics waiting nearby. The gunshot victim was given emergency medical treatment by Schaumburg Fire Department paramedics, and transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
