Nurse Who Helped Victims Among 4 Killed in Mass Shooting in Fordyce, Arkansas That Wounded 14

Police and firefighter/paramedics near Fordyce, Arkansas responded about 11:38 a.m. Friday, June 21, 2024 to a report of a mass shooting at the Mad Butcher supermarket in a strip mall, The Mall Shopping Center, 920 West 4th Street, Fordyce, Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas State Police (ASP), a lone shooter shot 14 people, killing four and wounding ten. The shooter caused injuries that ranged from non-life threatening to critical to fatal. The fourth person who was reported killed, died on Sunday.

The suspect, Travis Eugene Posey, 44, of New Edinburg, was also wounded by gunfire, bringing the total shot to 15.




Six police officers working for the Fordyce Police Department and the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office were on the scene during the shooting response assignment.

Upon arrival, police officers immediately engaged with the shooter. Two police officers suffered non-life threatening injuries during the shootout; and the suspect was shot by police, resulting in a non-life threatening wound to the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody.

Four additional Fordyce Police officers and an off-duty officer employed by the Stuttgart Police Department arrived on scene after the suspect was taken into custody.




Jacob Murry, 26, an officer who serves both the Fordyce Police Department and the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, was treated Friday for minor injuries related to gunfire. Fordyce Police Officer James Johnson, 31, was released from a Little Rock hospital Saturday evening after being treated for a gunshot wound.

Police arrived within 3 minutes of the reported shooting, and the suspect was down within 5 minutes of the reported shooting, according to the Arkansas State Police.

Suspect Travis Eugene Posey, 44, of New Edinburg, Arkansas will be charged with four counts of Capital Murder, according to the Arkansas State Police.

ASP’s Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the shooting.

Posey is the owner of a Kingsland, Arkansas tree service company, and operated the company since 2010, according to the South Arkansas Reckoning — referring to a LinkedIn profile (Travis “Joey” Posey – Tree Service).

Kingsland is located about 8 miles northeast of Fordyce.

Additional charges are pending. Travis Eugene Posey was treated for non-life-threatening injuries after exchanging gunfire with law enforcement, and was released to ASP custody and transported to the Ouachita County Detention Center, where he was held.




According to NNY360, Posey has a criminal history with the New York State Police on November 14, 2011 when he was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon near Watertown, New York, and after Posey allegedly attempted to bring a weapon through the gates of Fort Drum. He was working as a trucker at the time.

Fort Drum is a military installation, home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), located in northwest New York and about 30 miles from Canada.

Posey pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct, and was released on a $200 fine. Police confiscated the gun, which was not registered in New York.
