.KEY MESSAGES…

– Increasing threat for heavy rainfall Wednesday night through Thursday, particularly east of I-55. Renewed river rises and flooding possible, although uncertainty in exact storm track and placement of heaviest rain totals remains.

– Strong signal for unseasonably warm weather this weekend into early next week

.UPDATE… Issued at 900 PM CDT Tue Apr 9 2024

The forecast of a mostly clear and seasonably cool night underneath high pressure remains on track. Nudged forecast lows down a bit into the upper 30s in favored cool spots of interior northern Illinois, with lower to mid 40s elsewhere.

It continues to appear that much of the area will squeeze in another pleasant daytime period before the advertised inclement weather (rain and increasingly windy conditions) moves in Wednesday evening and overnight. With a good amount of sun to start the day, followed by increasing clouds, expecting inland areas to reach the mid to upper 60s, with isolated 70F readings not out of the question. A lake breeze will develop early, limiting highs near the lake to the mid to upper 50s toward mid day, and dropping gradually through the afternoon, with the lake cooling footprint spreading steadily inland.

Kept PoPs (20-40%) confined to south of the Illinois and Kankakee Rivers during the afternoon, highest south of US-24. Slowed down the northward push of rain (tweaked PoPs lower) for areas north of I-80 Wednesday evening, with the bulk of the rain arriving toward and after midnight.

.DISCUSSION… Issued at 253 PM CDT Tue Apr 9 2024

Through Wednesday:

Winds will generally remain out of the west to southwest and fairly light through Wednesday morning. Skies are expected to be fairly clear overnight which will allow for additional radiational cooling for temperatures to drop back down into the low 40s. Any mid 40s, will likely be south of I-80 under the robust cloud shield from the mid level moisture streaming northeastward.

The next system will gradually move to the northeast out of Texas Wednesday through Thursday. Winds will turn to the south and advect warmer air northward for high temperatures in the 60s, with the exception being for areas closer to Lake Michigan where a lake breeze will turn winds to the northeast and provide slightly cooler temperatures along the shoreline. Most of Wednesday should remain fairly dry, although recent model runs have the warm front moving slightly quicker to the north providing the chances a bit earlier. There was lower confidence in the exact timing on the rain arrival so most of the area south of I-80 was kept at a slight chance for showers (15 to 24 percent) while a sliver of area south of US-24 was given the chance (up to 40 percent) for rain showers to develop tomorrow afternoon. The rain is expected to become more widespread through the night. For those details, see the discussion listed below.
