UPDATE: In a press conference at 3:57 p.m. Tuesday, Lake County Sheriff’s Det. Chris Covelli did not mention that any suspects were apprehended. When questioned away from the podium, he responded that if the Illinois State Police had a suspect, he would probably have known about it. He did not outright deny that a suspect was apprehended. During the press conference, Lake County Det. Chris Covelli confirmed that Fox Lake police officer Lt Joe Gliniewicz was killed during a foot pursuit Tuesday morning.

At about 4:12 p.m. Tuesday, CNN stated that report from the Illinois State Police that one suspect had been captured, was inaccurate. CNN had said the report came from Illinois State Police Sgt. Matt Boerwinkle. He is the Chief Public Information Officer for the Illinois State Police.

As of 4:45 p.m. CT, the official Illinois State Police twitter account has no mention of the Fox Lake incident, and there is no mention of the conversation or possible miscommunication involving CNN.

Lt Joe Gliniewicz was shot and killed as he was responding to a suspicious person call a little before 8:00 a.m. Tuesday and radioed in that he was involved in a foot pursuit. He was only able to report that he was chasing a male/white subject, a male/black subject and possibly a third subject, who did not immediately have any descriptor when a local police alert for officer safety was broadcast.
